100 Monkeys Take to the Airwaves
Written by Crys (drummergrl1310)

Just a few minute ago 100 Monkeys were live on streaming radio at http://bullsradio.org/. I made sure to catch the hour long show so that I could bring you, our loyal EGE readers, an exclusive recap. I know, I know, it was difficult for me to listen to those silly, amazing, talented monkeys for an hour, but I did it. For you. It was a sacrifice, but one I feel was worth it. See how much I love you guys?
Let’s just get one thing out of the way right now, so I can move on with an unbiased account of the show: There was, as usual, not nearly enough Ben Johnson. Dearest Ben, I love your sweet, stoic demeanor, but I love your intelligence and eloquence even more, so please start speaking up more often! We really do care what you have to say.
Moving on. The one hour show streamed live, and was a mix of recorded tracks, live interviews, and live performances. One of the key themes of the interview was the upcoming Spencer Bell Legacy show in Dallas on April 24th. For those of you who don’t know, Spencer Bell was a friend of the guys’ who passed away suddenly from adrenal cancer a few years ago. Since then the Monkeys have taken it upon themselves to keep Spencer’s music and art, his legacy, alive. The latest way they’re doing this is with the release of a 3rd posthumous Spencer Bell album, “Brain”, which will debut at the legacy shows. Ben J produced this album and Scott the Scientist mixed it.
If at all possible I highly suggest you try to attend the SBL show. It will feature amazing music, amazing people, and will be contributing to a great cause. Plus, you can meet me, which I know you’re absolutely DYING to do, right? Right??? In all seriousness, please do visit www.spencerbellmemorial.com to find out more about what you can do to help further adrenal cancer research. If you absolutely cannot attend the show, then be sure to buy “Brain” when it comes out April 24th.
Another chunk of time was spent pimping out Marty the Bananager. Literally. He’s single ladies, and apparently lonely, since Jackson mentioned this fact several times. So if your turn-ons include thick, yellow skin, hanging from trees in bunches, and being a monkey’s best friend, then the Bananager just might be the guy for you! On a side note, Scott the Scientist is not single. He does, however, have an awesome dog named Gus.
The Monkeys also mentioned two very interesting pieces of news. As you may know, they are currently in the middle of a 100 city tour. What you probably don’t know is that Scott the Scientist has been touring with them and recording each live show, so that at the end of the tour they can release a 2 disc compilation set of the tour. How cool is that? Well, almost as cool as the 100 Monkeys Swimsuit Calendar being released tonight at midnight, that’s how cool! Yes, you read that right. Monkeys. And bananas. Lounging on the beach. Compiled into a calendar to be enjoyed daily for an entire year. If you have to have one for yourself (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t have to have one?) then you can order it at www.100monkeysmusic.com
During the show fans from all over the country called in to ask the band questions. During these conversations they tried their hardest to solicit candy from the callers, encouraging them to attempt to push candy through the phone lines to them. As far as I know, this never worked. Surprising, I know.
One young lady called in to ask about the improv songs the band is famous for doing at each show. What was their favorite one, how do they come up with the ideas, etc. Everyone basically agreed that “Jello” had turned out very cool, as well as “Flying Squirrels” and “Apple Juice”. “Apple Juice” came about when the guys couldn’t resist a sweet, innocent young child in the front of the audience who yelled out “WHISKEY!” when asked by the band for improve ideas. “Apple juice it is!” Jerad Anderson declared. It was also generally agreed upon that “Armadillos vs. Unicorns” had turned out nicely. Apparently the audience couldn’t agree on one theme, so they went with both. Jackson, being a realist, pointed out that a unicorn would only win in a mythical fight, since it wouldn’t show up to a fight in reality so the armadillo would win by default. Excellent logic, J.
Another fan called in to ask how the guys balance music with their other careers. (Jackson, Jerad, and Ben G are all actors when not traversing the country making music.) The answer is that the careers go hand in hand. Jackson and Jerad recently produced and acted in a movie called “Girlfriend”, for which 100 Monkeys is writing the score. Be on the lookout for that.
The story of how they came to be was discussed. Ben G and Jackson went to high school together. Ben J eventually came out to Hollywood. Jerad met Jackson through an acting class, and Uncle Larry was added on through the acting circle as well.
Bowling came up during one phone call. Did you know that bowling isn’t the same everywhere? Neither did I! Apparently you can find 5 pin bowling in Canada, while Massachusetts has candlestick bowling, which uses super-skinny, hard-to-hit pins. Huh. Who knew? During this call plans were tentatively made for a California “Rock-a-bowl-a-thon”. Hmm, sounds fun!
Besides just candy, the Monkeys also tried to get a California caller to send coffee beans through the phone, since California apparently has incredible coffee. Again, to the best of my knowledge this experiment never worked. “A” for effort though!
One caller wanted to know what their favorite thing about being on tour was. The answer is meeting new people, especially the bands and musicians they have been able to work with. 100 Monkeys is currently touring with The Kissing Club, which features Jake Miller from The Stevedores. The Stevedores, for those of you unfamiliar with Monkey lore, is a band that Ben J used to play in with Spencer. The band continues to play together in one form or another. Really, everyone around these guys create one sort of giant, evolving, musical family, which is pretty darn cool if you ask me. If you want to check out The Kissing Club you can do so at www.myspace.com/thekissingclub
Finally, the Monkeys ended the show with a short acoustic set featuring Clippity Clop, The Monkey Song, and Junkie.
Overall this was an hour well spent! (Ok, come on, by now you guys know me. And you know that I’d happily spend an entire day listening to these guys.) If you haven’t jumped on board the 100 Monkeys train yet, now would be an excellent time to do so! It’s hard not to fall in love with the passion and dedication these gentleman have for their craft. As Jackson so eloquently put it at the end of the show, “Music is only kept alive nowadays by the listeners, so thanks so much to ya’ll for listenin.”
