Memphis goes bananas over 100 Monkeys!
By Andrea Jones
It’s no surprise that Memphis gave 100 Monkeys a warm welcome when they blew the roof off the Hi-Tone Café on Wednesday, April 21, but what was even better was the response from the band, hospitably granting interviews and picture opportunities with hopeful members of the media (including yours truly) and eager fans alike.
Jackson Rathbone, who, as everyone knows, plays Jasper Hale in the Twilight saga movies and is one fifth of the growing phenomenon known as 100 Monkeys, seemed unusually approachable as the band performed at the intimate venue, walking through the crowd of fans to grace the stage, completely unguarded by the burly, muscle-men type figures one would think a celebrity of his current stature would need.
Currently smack-dab in the middle of a one hundred city tour, it’s these cozy locations and candid accessibility to their favorite Twilight vampire that has more people taking note of the band and running to buy their ticket, which are extremely modest in price.
During a pre-performance interview, I had the opportunity to ask the band, whose members include Ben Graupner, Ben Johnson, Jackson Rathbone, Uncle Larry, and Jared Anderson, about how Jackson’s success has affected the band. “Well it certainly hasn’t hurt,” Graupner chimed in, “but it’s really all about the entertainment.”
That led to wonder about their influences. “The bands we get to play with, I think has been a great influence on us,” Rathbone answered, and the band had nothing but positive things to say about Rainy Day Manual, who opened up for the Monkeys on Wednesday. “They’re really great,” he added, but also noted that the late Spencer Bell (a dear friend of the band who passed away at the age of twenty from adrenal cancer and who wrote the wildly popular “The Monkey Song”) has also been a huge influence on them.
Seemingly a show of organized chaos, the band members would rotate from one instrument to another in between songs, proving to their audience the true extent of their talent. Mr. Rathbone himself not only played guitar, organ, and drums during the band’s performance, but also sang many of the songs, including their newest hit, “Ugly Girl.”
But it wasn’t just the band I had the pleasure of talking with. The fans, whose age gamut was incredibly vast, were equally as wonderful, but it was two ladies in particular whom I struck up a conversation with that impressed me the most.
Becky Bunker and Nancy Hales of Lakeland, who are both die-hard Twilight fanatics and first-time 100 Monkeys concert goers, might not be twenty-something anymore but they are both undeniably young at heart. At first glance they seem an unlikely fit to the mold of most Twi-hards, but that just goes to show how vast the fandom of Twilight has become.
Young or young at heart, everyone enjoyed seeing their favorite vampire and listening to the infectious, funky-rock sounds of 100 Monkeys, and we certainly hope they make their way back Memphis very soon!

Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,
I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I’m stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit – who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.
I’m pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I’ve read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine’s and Chris’s movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine’s notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz’s companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk – a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for “newborn” status in the universe you’ve been living inside for a few years now, but a guy’s gotta start somewhere.
Like many of you, I’ve always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn’t been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I’ve been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.
The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don’t think it’s difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy – and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.
I’m a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?
Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below, and I’ll do my best to answer them. I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I’ll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. I am excited and grateful to have all of you alongside me for my TWILIGHT journey.
All best,
Bill Condon

Welcome to EGE’s Eclipse Re-Read! I’ll write a new post for each chapter of the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on June 30th. So, grab your copy of Eclipse! Come here to revist the book, talk with other fans, and add any comments. This will help the time go by much faster. We will post 2 chapters a week. On Monday and Friday.
Chapter Number: 10
Chapter Name: Scent
Page Numbers: 214 – 238
Date of Chapter: June 3, 2006
Summary:
The Chapter starts with Edward leaving, because Jacob is on his way over. When Jacob gets there, Bella finds him wearing only his cut off jeans, and she is slightly put off by the fact that he always seems half naked. Jacob tells her that he has to carry his clothes around with him using a strap that is wrapped around his calf. Jacob decides to get to work and asks Bella where the intruder’s scent was the strongest. When she replies her bedroom, his response is similar to what Edward’s had been. But Jacob goes up and inspects the area like he was asked to. When Jacob returns he says that he caught the scent.
As Bella washes the dishes, Jacob begins to ask her questions about her and Edward’s relationship, centering on how she feels about him being a vampire and when she is planning on being changed. The anger and sadness of her answer, and the fact that it will be so soon after graduation, causes Jacob to clench down on a knife in his hand and cut himself badly. Bella witnesses his ability to heal quickly and it leaves her astonished. Jacob invites Bella to the reservation for a bonfire party, and Bella tells him she would ask if it was ok. With that Jacob leaves and Edward returns from where he was waiting just outside the house.
Edward asks about the bloody knife Bella accidentally left on the counter after her bleach-filled cleaning frenzy from when Jacob cut himself, and she tells him what happened. Edward takes out a large envelope that he retrieved from her mail and hands it to her. Bella’s application from Dartmouth was accepted without Bella’s knowledge that Edward had even sent it in. Edward tries to persuade her to spend a year at school in an effort to put off her change for as long as possible, but Bella remains unmoved. Her mind is made up – and even waiting until graduation seemed too risky to her.
Bella mentions to Edward about the missing clothes and pillows from her room and asks him to ask Alice where she put them, but he is completely confused. He says that Alice hadn’t taken her things. That’s when the pieces click into place and he realizes that the same intruder that was in her room had taken things that contained her scent to bring back as proof that she had been found. When Edward’s phone rings, it is Carlisle and before Edward can tell him about the new development, Carlisle informs him that the situation in Seattle is getting worse – truthfully it is way out of control. Something needs to be done.
Edward brings up the bonfire party, and Bella says that she wasn’t going to go because of everything that was happening. Edward suggests that she go anyway because he knows she wants to. Before heading up to the rendezvous point in-between territories to meet up with Jacob, Edward and Bella go back to the Cullen’s garage to pick up her motorcycle so she can bring it back to La Push, where it belongs. She sees that Edward had bought a bike so he could ride with her. The comparison between the new, pristine bike that Edward bought and her beat up rebuilt bike serves as a comparison of her and Edward which makes her sad. Edward realizes that riding was something special between her and Jacob and plays it off as no big deal. His only request is that she wear the protective equipment that he bought her to keep her safe while she is riding. Edward takes Bella to the boundary armed with a cell phone so she can call him when she is ready to come home. Edward leaves her with a deep kiss for Jacob’s benefit and then drives off – but not before Jacob returns the favor by wrapping his arms tightly around Bella so Edward could see. And Bella is not pleased.

The family that slays together, stays together.
At least that’s the case for the Cullen brood.
In “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which hits theaters June 30, Seattle is ravaged by a series of killings caused by an army of newborn vampires controlled by revenge-seeking bloodsucker Victoria. To combat the threat against Bella ( Kristen Stewart) in this third installment of the franchise, the Cullens must band together and join forces with their sworn enemies, the wolf pack.
“The whole family is in a vulnerable position because of the love we have for Bella,” said Elizabeth Reaser, who plays matriarch Esme Cullen. “If she’s not OK, we’re not OK.”
In the past, we’ve seen the clan hit baseballs so hard that they can play only in a thunder storm, to block out the sound. And we’ve watched the buttoned-up human imposters welcome Bella into their home as the human girlfriend of one of their own — the handsome Edward.
“This time around, you get to see their true vampire-ness,” said Peter Facinelli, who plays head vampire Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the series based on the bestselling books by Stephenie Meyer.
What can we expect from the pale-faced Cullen family (which includes the Hale siblings) this go around? Here’s what the actors say audiences can expect from the story and their characters:
Facinelli: “For me, as Carlisle, it’s an exciting portion of the series. Carlisle is very compassionate and he has a lot of killing to do in this movie. I joke, after he kills the bad guys, he says he’s sorry in his head. And, you know, he’s calm and level-headed. He’s the rock of the family. He usually has a lot of information to draw from because Alice can see into the future and Edward can read minds. In this third movie, he’s not getting that information. Neither one of his sources are working, so he’s kind of flying blind.”
Reaser: “Esme is still a vampire. She still wants to kill people all day long. It was interesting to get in touch with the vampire side of her in ways that haven’t really been explored. Her family is in danger and that brings out the mama bear in her.
Ashley Greene (as Alice Cullen): “Yeah, she’s delicate and prissy at times, but Alice gets a little edgier with each installment. And with these vampires messing with her family and the people she loves, you’re going to see a bit of her toughness. It’s a reminder to the audience that even though we restrain ourselves at times, we’re still vampires and we’re dangerous. You’re going to see the dark, dangerous side of Alice.”
Kellan Lutz (as Emmett Cullen): “You’re going to see a smile on Emmett’s face from start to finish. He just loves to fight. And there’s a lot of fighting. He sort of plays bigger in this one than the others.”
Jackson Rathbone (as Jasper Hale): “You’ll get to see a little bit of the root of what makes Jasper so withdrawn and quiet in the Cullen family. Fans will get some of Jasper’s back story in ‘Eclipse.’ I got to wear the whole Civil War gear and everything. There’s a bit of the softer and darker side of Jasper in this film.”
Nikki Reed (as Rosalie Hale): “You see a reason for her attitude. I think fans will feel for her. There was a bit of that in ‘New Moon.’ Fans got to see a bit of her sensitive side. Her sane side. Her logical side. And her desire to help her family. This time around, she is much more of a participant. She’s a survivor. This is her family. So if protecting Bella means protecting her family, she’s going to do it.”
Robert Pattinson (as Edward Cullen): Snagging a phone interview with the brooding dreamboat — who was overseas shooting his latest film, “Bel Ami” — proved difficult. So what can we expect from the lovesick Edward? He promises to love Bella “every moment of forever,” as the trailer reveals. He’s still hesitant about her becoming a vampire. He’s determined to protect her from Victoria. And he’s vying with Jacob for her affections. Oh, the life of an antique teenage vampire.

Up close and personal with Kellan Lutz
By Kimberly Sherman
In part one of my two part interview with Kellan Lutz, we spoke about the fans and enduring the endless paparazzi. Today, readers will glean a true sense of Kellan’s dedication to the Twilight Saga and his playful personality. Enjoy.
Combine a farm boy work ethic with a cutting edge intellect, then intersperse a savvy sense of the Hollywood scene, and you have a young man rich in the ways of life, but bright-eyed and ready to take on the world.
The chiseled physique of Kellan Lutz immediately draws in the eye. His background as an Abercrombie and Fitch model comes of no surprise; his exotic look and playful, yet Mephistophelian glint in his eyes implies a possible clannish, clubby decorum.
Yet nothing could be further from the truth. A free spirit, Kellan’s boyish, playful nature and willingness to speak to me and put his life on a platter for fans to snack on is endearing, bold, and insightful:
About being a free spirit:
I just love what I do. I found myself going on this one path becoming a chemical engineer making $60,000 a year- it was a respectable job. But my personality needs more. The rush of having an audition or becoming another character was awesome. But thank God that He was there shooing me in the right direction. He just kept me safe, and I know I put my mom through some stressful times.
That’s why I wear a white bracelet on left wrist. It’s my freedom bracelet. It’s finally my life and I get to do what I want to do, and it reminds me where I came from. I’m in it for the right reasons. I don’t care to be famous; I don’t care to be in the tabloids. I just love to act. I enjoy it so much. It’s just my favorite hobby that I’ve unlocked inside of myself, and I’d love to do it for the rest of my life.
About his favorite project:
My oldest brother’s in the marine corps, now for 10 years, in Iraq, and we retold the story of Generation Kill for HBO, which is based on the 2003 Iraqi invasion. It’s the story of these marines who went in there and killed all these people and no one died out of the whole recon division. It’s based on a true story. It’s such a reality check that we got to show the world through HBO’s eyes. It was really challenging, and I grew so many years in maturity. It was seven months living in Africa, and I saw parts of the world that I was so ignorant about. But once I got there, I fell in love with Capetown. I’ve never been somewhere where the land, the earth gave you energy before. I felt so alive there. And I have friends for life now, from all around the world.
(Generation Kill is a seven part mini-series available on Amazon.com, at Blockbuster, or on HBO)
About staying in shape- both at home and on the set of Eclipse:
I like to box. I have a boxing area in the back yard with a couple of bags and I like to see my boxing coach when I’m in town. I have a pool in my back yard. I love to swim; I grew up swimming. I just love it; it’s the best exercise. I hate running but I’ll take my dog for a walk or we’ll go climbing boulders she has so much energy and that’s why I love her, because she pushes me and I push her.
When we’re up here (Vancouver) I’ve been gaining weight and lifting really heavy. We do fight training every other day that consists of jujitsu, kung fu, boxing, and kickboxing- just mixed martial arts to really prepare for our fight sequences. It’s intense. I’ve never had the small muscles that hold the big muscles so sore before.

Kellan Lutz is humbled by fans and longs for normalcy
By Kimberly Sherman
After a grueling day on the set of Eclipse and playing guinea pig in preparation for shooting fight scenes, the always-gracious Kellan Lutz was sweet enough to use some of his much-needed down time to chat with me.
Kellan is an open book about many things close to his heart, including a several month journey to Africa to film Generation Kill, and his dog, Kola. I’ll reveal more about his passions tomorrow in part two of our interview. During our conversation, however, the issue of respect came to play, giving fans an inside peek into the lack of privacy which has become a constant in the lives of the Twilight stars.
Hype surrounding the Saga and enthusiastic, gift-bearing fans are at a culminated high during the filming of Eclipse, as are paparazzi determined to catch the actors in any situation, both on and off set. While the actors of the Twilight Saga are incredibly generous and appreciative of their endearing fans, they, too, enjoy their much-needed, rarely granted seclusion.
About his fans and desire for unrequited privacy from paparazzi, Kellan said:
Everyone’s so loving and supporting- there’s no haters. There’s so many Twilight fans that have given me presents- gummy bears or chew toys for my dog. It’s so humbling; people wanting to have a picture with me or wanting me to sign something. It’s so endearing.
But when we’re here working 12, 14, 16 hour days, on our off days we just want to be a normal human being and go get a bite to eat or go play pool and be normal. We just want to get out of our hotel rooms or apartments, but we can’t, and that’s a tough thing. And we don’t always want to have to look our best. I just love dressing comfy to go out, but we can’t because there’s always photographers there.
The other day I was working out at the gym. Photographers were shooting from across the street through the windows of the gym to me working out. I couldn’t just work out and blow off some steam. So where does the privacy start and the publicity end? When is it enough?
We’re all very happy to be working and be part of an amazing franchise like this, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s allowed me to get some great work and to do amazing movies, independent ones that I can show some great acting with, and some great character roles, but really, we’re just human…
I can’t fathom what other people go through. I’m just a part of this franchise… I’m Kellan. There’s nothing super special about me that’s worthwhile. I wish there were more pictures of people helping out. Show Brad and Angelina and all the good work they do. Show me at my charity events, but really, do you need to see pictures of me walking my dog 20 million times?
Immediately following our conversation, I found this e-mail along with link and pictures from a widely known paparazzi-friendly site waiting in my inbox:
Kellan Lutz shows off his tight and toned body at a local Vancouver gym Wednesday during breaks in the filming of Eclipse. The Twilight hottie checked himself out in the mirror as he worked out – and with a body like that, who can blame him! See the newest pics of the shirtless Emmett Cullen…
Pictures representing the very lament Kellan had just shared were being plastered around the net as we spoke.
Understandably, viewing images and videos of our favorite Twilight actors, even being caught off guard, satiate a need fans have for that immediate fix of eye-candy. Though we don’t mean any harm, in feeding our addiction we unknowingly instill an inert sense of hurt in our favorite actors.
Kellan knows that paparazzi and fandom is a part of his lifestyle, and he graciously embraces the limelight under the proper circumstances. His intermittent, spontaneous lament, however, immediately put a soulful, heartfelt need of all the Twilight actors to light in a manner that may touch others and spur true fans to act.
The next time you’re tempted to check out that salacious picture of your favorite Twilight star caught “in the act,” be it working out, eating, grabbing a coffee, walking a dog, or catching a ciggy break in the dark, take a deep breath, resist temptation to gawk, and allow the actor to maintain what little bit of privacy s/he can.

I have finally finished processing all the thoughts, photos, and video from last weekend! It’s never taken me this long before, but I’ve never been to a concert quite like the SBL shows either. I’ve already posted my review and my video, so without further ado, here are my pictures. Between Mary and I we took over 100, so I’m not going to post them all here. You can, however, check them out in EGE’s photo gallery here. Oh, and in case you didn’t read my review (shame on you!), the pictures that look very, very dark were taken during a power outage.
